Chapter 6
The group guided Nick through the forest. The three young men in white clothes were members of the cult, truth-seekers Stone called them. They seemed to hang on every word Eric said, though Nick felt the tall man was simply parroting platitudes. From his perspective, Eric seemed unable to maintain a coherent train of thought for more than a few sentences, before he bounced off to a totally new, and equally inane, topic. Stone, he saw, was ignoring the guru, while the two armed men moved with a confidence and care that suggested they were professionals. That, Nick considered, might be an issue.
Deeper under the jungle canopy they came to a fence that ran from the ground to vanish somewhere among the tall trees. There were another pair of guards at the gate, and Nick noticed a metal box connected to a black cable attached to the gatepost. At a word from Stone, the guards opened the gate and Nick found himself ushered inside along with the rest of the party. Beyond the fence, still hidden under a mix of forest canopy and camouflage netting, Nick made out a small settlement. Along one side, backed against the threes, were low single-story barn-like buildings. On the other side was a row of small bungalows. Stone brought Nick to one of these, after her farewells to the guru and his followers. The guards, Nick noticed, stayed with him and Stone.
âAm I a prisoner?â Nick asked, indicating the guards.
Stone laughed. âNo. They live in the same area as you. Theyâre on their way home.â
The two armed men peeled off, just before Stone indicated a small bungalow. âThis is yours. You should find it adequately furnished. I suggest you remain here until I or someone comes for you. The truth-seekers are not used to strangers. They might be unpredictable.â
Nick grinned. âWith what youâre paying me, I think I can slum it here for a few days⦠it will just be a few days?â
Stone laughed again. âOf course. Weâll need you to fly for us again soon, Iâm sure. Oh, one last thing; if you smoke, be very careful. The wood these buildings are made from is Ocote, itâs highly flammable. I wouldnât want you burning the whole town down.â
She left him then, and he climbed the steps to his new home. He wandered around as if checking out the fittings. The building had a small kitchen, a bathroom, a reasonable sized bedroom, and a small but comfortable sitting room. All were well furnished and air-conditioned. As he checked, Nick kept his eyes open for any surveillance devices. He couldnât spot any, which either meant there were none, or they were well hidden. In either case, he needed a shower after the heat of the jungle outside, and then a nice long nap.
